Thala Beach Nature Reserve Details

Overview

Thala Beach Nature Reserve is a Port Douglas resort located on a private headland between Cairns and Port Douglas offering a selection of unique accommodation options. The resort has achieved the highest level of Advanced Eco Certification. Unique and complimentary on site tours and experiences are available for guests to enjoy during their stay.
Thala Beach Nature Reserve has many facilities across 58 hectare of beachfront native forest. The Main Lodge is the hub of Thala – here you’ll find Osprey’s Restaurant on one side of the pavilion-style building looking northwards with mountain and ocean views. Curlews Lounge & Bar forms the southern pavilion overlooking more mountains and ocean all the way to Double Island and Cairns beyond. Connecting the pavilions is where you’ll find Reception, the boutique, Adventure desk, art gallery and the Rainforest Lounge.
Two Freeform Pools
Our main swimming pool is located on the crest of the headland adjacent to Thala’s Main Lodge. This stunning pool features waterfalls, spas and grottos for that late night romantic swim, or just to recline on the edge of the water and gaze out over the ocean. Sun lounges are dotted around the pool beneath shady trees.
Secluded among the gardens is the “Rock Pool” a smaller and more intimate swimming pool for guests looking for a quiet grove in which to relax. A waterfall cascades into the swimming pool which is surrounded by rainforest.
Private Sandy Beaches
A deluxe eco retreat surrounded by over 2 km of private sandy beaches and sheltered coves, Thala sits on a headland jutting into the Coral Sea. Long evening walks, romantic beach picnics or relaxing in hammocks strung between palm trees, Oak Beach is a secret piece of paradise for Thala’s guests.
NOTE: Swimming in the ocean is not recommended between November and May due to the potential presence of dangerous marine stingers across more than 2,000km of coastline in northern Australian waters (Queensland, Northern Territory & West Australia). Two freshwater freeform swimming pools are available for swimming year round. For more information on climate and ocean hazards check out local area weather page
Check out Thala’s Private Beach page for more photos.
Walking Trails
A network of marked walking trails meander through native forest, palm groves and our very own coconut plantation.
Keep an eye out for wallabies grazing in the early morning and late afternoon. Slow moving monitor lizards are often spotted on the forest floor.
Overhead in the forest canopy birds and butterflies can be seen with the naked eye or by using complimentary binoculars available from reception.
