Pen-y-bryn Details

Overview

Pen-y-bryn Lodge was built as a private residence in 1889 by the famed architectural firm of Forrester & Lemon for local businessman John Bulleid and his wife, Fanny. Pen-y-bryn is Welsh for “Top of the Hill” and indeed the house sits atop South Hill, one of Oamaru’s most sought-after districts. Reputed to be the largest single-storey timber dwelling in Australasia, the house has kept true to its Victorian heritage and today offers discerning guests the perfect combination of old world elegance and modern amenities.
Thank you for your interest in Pen-y-bryn Lodge! Ever since we purchased Pen-y-bryn in 2010, we have strived to make this historic homestead the preeminent destination for discerning travellers to Oamaru, North Otago and the Waitaki District. We have put tremendous effort into upgrading Pen-y-bryn’s facilities in order to ensure that our guests who come to us from far and wide encounter the level of comfort and service that they expect from a New Zealand Luxury Lodge.

The Garden Room
The Garden Room has been completely remodelled and expanded in time for the 2015-16 travel season. Located on the upstairs level of our Oamaru stone “annex” building, the Garden Room is now our largest room, with a super-king bed (convertible into twin king singles upon request) and separate sitting area with satellite television. The room overlooks the original Pen-y-bryn gardens, some of which are now located in neighbouring properties. The ensuite bathroom features heated tile floors and separate bath and shower. The room measures approximately 48 square metres (515 square feet) in total.

The Nest Room
The Nest Room has been completely remodelled and expanded during winter 2015. Located on the upstairs level of our Oamaru stone “annex” building, the Nest Room is now one of our largest rooms (and is probably our favourite), with a super-king bed that converts into twin king singles upon request, and a view out toward the Pacific Ocean and the Kakanui Ranges. With its sunken bedroom area, this room is very popular with honeymooners. The ensuite bathroom features heated tile floors and separate bath and shower, and the sitting area features a satellite television. This room measures approximately 45 square metres (485 square feet) in total.

The Park Room
The Park Room has been completely remodelled and expanded in time for the 2015-16 travel season. Located on the upstairs level of our Oamaru stone “annex” building, the Park Room is now one of our largest rooms, with a super-king bed (convertible into twin king singles upon request), overlooking the extensive pottage garden within the Lodge grounds, with Awamoa Park in the background. The ensuite bathroom features heated tile floors and separate bath and shower, and your sitting area features a satellite television. This room measures approximately 46 square metres (495 square feet) in total.

The Victoria Room
The Victoria Room is located opposite the Elizabeth Room in the main Lodge building, and is characterised by its antique oak furnishings. This room, which overlooks the Oamaru stone terrace and gardens, basks in the afternoon sun. Like the Elizabeth Room, the en-suite has a beautiful period-style tile floor with underfloor heating.

The Elizabeth Room
The Elizabeth Room is one of two rooms in the main Lodge building and was originally the bedroom for one of the family members. The en-suite was originally the house’s sole bathroom, and still features the original large porcelain pedestal bath with Victorian brass fittings, and French doors leading into the private courtyard garden. It also enjoys a beautiful tile floor with underfloor heating. This room has a maximum capacity of two guests.
