Opua Home Details

Overview

The Opua Home starts with a breathtaking view across the bay — up, across and down the bay!
Just below the house is a small semi-private beach.
From the house, walk into Paihia or Opua along the coastal bush track.
The bush around and below the house backs onto a reserve that includes the Harrison Reserve — the last remaining piece of coastal virgin bush in Northland!
Relax in the privacy of the front deck and watch yachts, kayaks, cruise boats and dolphins go by.
Enjoy the sights and sounds of tuis, fantails, silvereyes, quail and kiwis in our fragrant bush.
Indoor-Outdoor living is integral to the Opua Home.
The view across the bay is accessible to every main living area in the house.
A barbeque on the front deck and plenty of outdoor furniture, together with easy access to the kitchen (to the right in this picture) makes for relaxed dining options.
The oval dining table extends to an eight to ten-seater table (and there are ten dining chairs, place settings, etc).
The Opua Home was designed by renowned eco-architect, Graeme North, and features this circular earth brick wall which absorbs heat from the sun by day and releases it in the cool of the night.
A tranquil and cool area on hot days, this living area is a cozy den in winter with a wood-burning fireplace (firewood provided).
In addition to the solar heating from a unit on the roof, a wetback on this fireplace adds to the heating of the hot water on cool days (and there is electrical back-up).
As with the rest of the house, furniture is an eclectic mix of antique and artisan-crafted pieces.

The master bedroom, which enjoys its own private deck facing the bay, features custom-made furniture with the organic, curved forms found throughout the house.
Queen sized bed with top quality firm mattress, cotton bedding, electric blanket, lights on dimmers.
Curtains, like others in the house, are hand silkscreened with New Zealand designs by Linda Williams of Vortex.
A fold-out desk and chair allow for quiet internet catch-up (wireless) with the bay view in front of you.
Top quality cream wool carpet for your barefoot pleasure; two roomy closets.
You can hear our kiwi calling at night from this room.
The large living area on the mezzanine level offers a varied selection of books (for adults and children).
There is also an assortment of games, puzzles and toys.
A range of videos and DVDs are provided in the guest/tv room downstairs.
A varied collection of music CDs is also provided with the downstairs stereo system (great accoustics here).
Excellent area for yoga/stretching.
Plenty to do if it rains!
The larger of the two upstairs bedrooms features a double and a single white wrought-iron bed — ideal for 2-3 three children or a couple (perhaps also with a young child).
Top quality firm mattresses, cotton bedding, electric blankets.
Dark wood furniture.
Cedar blinds in interior wall allow for ventilation and a peek at the stunning view across the mezzanine floor.
Bedroom window overlooks the front garden and northern hills.
This is an attic-style room with sloping ceilings.

Open-plan kitchen with easy access to living area and front deck.
Kitchen has ceramic electric cooktop, new electric oven, double drawer dishwasher, breadmaker, espresso machine, chef’s knives, recipe books and much more.
A large pantry includes herbs, spices and generally most staples you will need for home cooking.
The Opua Home is used for a time every year as a holiday home by the family who built it, so it is more completely set up with all the comforts of home than most holiday homes you’ll find.
And the view, as you work, looks over the bay...
Conservatory-style northern windows allow low-angled afternoon winter sun to pour into the living area.
The Opua Home is truly a house for all seasons.
All the lights in the living areas are on dimmers, so you can choose your night-time mood.
The downstairs bathroom, in addition to a roomy shower, offers a luxurious cast iron bath for the weary traveller.
Heated floor tiles for the winter.
Here, the theme is sea green; the upstairs bathroom is blue and white and decorated with a seashell frieze.
The water pressure’s great.
The views are of the bay and bush.
Both bathrooms have heated towel rails.
Towels, washcloths and soap are provided.
Right over the earth brick wall-enclosed area below, the mezzanine floor includes a cozy earth brick-wall surrounded nook with bean bags — ideal for games and reading.
A daybed at the side is a perfect spot for an afternoon nap looking out over the bay view through tall front windows.
Also pictured here is the top of the “tree” (right) around which the design of the house centers.
The sloping timber-clad ceiling extends, on the right, over the dining area below.
The smaller of the two upstairs bedrooms features macrocarpa and rimu furniture.
The single bed pictured comes apart to become two low single beds that may be placed apart or together.
Top quality firm mattresses, cotton bedding, electric blanket.
Cedar blinds by the bed allow for ventilation and a peek at the stunning view across the mezzanine floor.
Bedroom window overlooks the front garden and northern hills.
This is an attic-style room with sloping ceilings.
The covered back deck provides a shaded transition to the multi-layered back garden.
Here you will find growing, depending on the season, oranges, mandarins, grapefruit, lemons, limes, guavas, pawpaws, quinces, feijoas, tamarillos, salad rocket / arugula, silver beet / chard, mesclun salad greens, celery, broccoli, rhubarb — and pretty much every herb you might need.
Help yourself while you’re here!
The lower back garden is also a nice place to wander in the early morning or late afternoon to enjoy the bird life in the bush.
