Flinders Island’s extraordinary beauty combined with Mountain Seas’ facilities provide an exceptional venue for conferences, retreats, individual relaxation and workshops of all kinds. From bush walkers, to bird watchers and those looking for a retreat from hectic life, Mountain Seas can meet your idea of a perfect getaway. All this is complemented by an organically certified property.
Mountain Seas Retreat offers elegant accommodation, easy wilderness access, and has the added benefit of an Arts Centre to promote creativity in a variety of ways. We welcome individuals, couples and small groups to immerse themselves in the natural world and to find their unique creative expression. That may be photography, writing, drawing or painting…or simply curling up and reading a good book! We can support your exploration of the Island, relaxation or your deep dive into creativity.
Mountain Seas Retreat provides the unique potential to work with instructors on the island who can hold arts workshops, including photography, watercolor, ceramics, painting and music. Mountain Seas is also able co-ordinate guided bush walks and island tours. Facilitators with existing groups are encouraged to take advantage of our arts facilities to host their own arts retreats or conferences.
Mountain Seas Arts expanded its arts involvement beginning in 2014, offering an Artist in Residence Program, now available from April to December, 2016. The Residency allows artists to spend up to four weeks in nature's raw beauty, expressing through their chosen artistic medium. The Program is open to all types of artists including, but not limited to, painters, ceramicists, sculptors, writers, musicians, digital and mixed media artists. A residency allows the artist to experience the character of a place in great depth, inspiring a diverse range of rich and vibrant artistic interpretation. Our aim is to create an exciting Arts and wilderness initiative on Flinders Island by working in conjunction with established Arts bodies; offering opportunities for practicing national and international artists, while providing an artistic connection through workshop to the wider community.
Mountain Seas Retreat: this beautiful facility can accommodate up to 12, in single, twin or triple-share rooms, and has a comfortable meeting space and large outdoor area. The main area features a beautiful Gallery, where local and guest artists are displayed. (Fully booked, the property can host up to 20 people comfortably)
The Studio: a self-contained cottage used for guests and facilitators. It is a 10 minute walk from the main retreat centre.
The Art Centre: can host workshops in various mediums, and accommodate up to 20 people in different work areas. The Art Centre is equipped with two ceramic wheels, raku, electric and wood-fire kilns, hand-building tables, as well as space for acrylic painting, watercolors and other visual mediums. (Specific supplies are subject to negotiation as needed.) The views are magnificent, and there is a place to work outside as well.

The Yurt: an open room with kitchen and ensuite, which can host up to 25 people comfortably for presentations, films or visual projections. Music, writing and photography workshops are ideal here. It is fantastic for yoga and has basic exercise equipment. It is one of the spaces available for Artists in Residence.
We can host your group and provide meals, or make arrangements for you to use our kitchen. Details are arranged with each group. On occasion, we feature special dinners with guest chefs. These events are listed under 'Retreats/Events'. Mountain Seas sources as much local produce as possible.
Mountain Seas is contiguous to 40,000 acres of national park. We have private trails accessing tall trees, fresh water streams, waterfalls and sculptural granite boulders. The walk to the highest peak of Strzelecki Mountain begins one km from the property. The beaches, two kilometers from Mountain Seas, are among the best in the world. The white sandy beaches of Fotheringate and Trousers Point are featured in magazines such as Australian Geographic.


You can visit the Mountain Seas property as a guest at the Mountain Seas Retreat or you can book into a self-contained unit called The Studio. There are a variety of art and health retreats available.
Each of our rooms at the Retreat Centre is unique and has special features. Common to all suites at the Main Retreat Centre is the use of an outdoor 8-person Hot Springs Spa, with access to a great shower facility. Tea service is in each room, along with access to a shared communal kitchen with refridgerator, oven, cooktop and eating area, with TV and DVD capacity. The main retreat centre and conservatory is also accessible to all. All prices are based on a 2-night minimum stay, there is an additional cleaning fee for single night requests.
KING Suites: All 3 King beds in these suites can be split into 2-single beds.
Sweeping Vistas: This room is in the main house, and its private deck overlooks both Trousers Point beach and Fotheringate Beach, as well as the mountain. It has a lovely ensuite with shower over the bath; and is elegantly appointed with Chinese rug and rose décor.
Royal Blue: Great light in this suite, which features a big presence of the mountain out one window, and the sea from the upper deck which is shared with one other King Suite. The ensuite has Art Deco features, and has a good size shower.
Floral Glory: Adorned with Balinese woodcarving and a light, warm atmosphere, this room shares a 2nd story deck with Royal Blue. Great views of mountain and the seas, it has a roomy ensuite with a shower.
Queen Suits
Sleek Haven: This classic room is modern in its décor of black, greys and reds. Its ensuite has a bath and a separate shower. It is tucked in, with access to a deck and a sweeping view of the mountain with a hint of ocean.
Rattan Warmth: It is that! Warm and inviting, with features that also support disable access and extra space and comforts. Ensuite is spacious with a shower.
Giraffe Dreaming: A quirky and delightful room with excellent ocean view. It features a Queen bed, and has its bathroom across the hall, with possibly the best bath tub view on the Island! The bath is claw foot and extremely spacious.
Garden Suite, features a lovely space which has a private access to the Conservatory, and accesses its own smaller bathroom with a shower. Fabulous ocean views, and it is in the main building just off the Gallery area.
The YURT -- can be organized as a self-contained space with its small kitchen and bathroom, with stunning views over a lily-pond to the ocean. The bed is a double futon. This space is available for Artists in Residence who are looking for a more remote experience. (No block out curtains in this room!)
The Studio
The Studio is located behind the Tresemer's residence at Mountain Seas, and is just a five minute walk from the main Retreat Centre. The facility is self-contained and has a queen bed, living area with fireplace, a kitchenette, and full bathroom with shower over the bath. A small deck directly faces one of the peaks of Mount Strzelecki, and offers a deep and soulful connection to the bush. There is an ocean view as well. It’s about 2 km from the beach, and easily reached on push bikes. Both the Yurt and the Art Centre are close at hand, and making it a perfect retreat for those looking for a quiet place in nature while enjoying artistic expression. (No block out curtains in this room.)
The Studio, was originally designed and built around the principles of Sacred Geometry, based on the Golden Mean Ratio. The experience of living and sleeping here is one of deep peace and harmony.
