Hobart Hideaway Pods offers relaxed and convenient accommodation within 20 minutes drive of Hobart, Tasmania. Our accommodation consists of two individual ‘Pods’, named The Vanilla Pod and The Pea Pod. The pods were created with a focus on low impact eco friendly design. We look forward to hosting you at Hobart Hideaway Pods during your Tasmanian visit.
Both pods are equipped with king-sized beds, which can also be configured as a twin on request (two king-singles), fluffy towels, hair dryer, composting toilet (the luxurious kind) shower and basin. Also provided is an iron and ironing board, coat stand and hangers, TV, heater, WiFi, books, magazines and some games.
The kitchenette includes a kettle, toaster, bar fridge, microwave, and all the trimmings. There is even a small mini-bar stocked with some local wines, ciders and beers. Guests are welcome to bring their own breakfast goodies. Tea and coffee is complimentary. A continental breakfast is available on request, which includes bread/toast, condiments, cereal, yoghurt, and fresh fruit.
The pods have bi-folding doors, which open up the entire front onto sweeping decks. A comprehensive guest information book provides further details on the property and suggests things to do and places to eat & drink nearby.
The Vanilla Pod
The Vanilla Pod has a smaller en suite style bathroom, a larger main room, and more expansive views of the Derwent River to the Tasman Peninsula beyond.
The Pea Pod
The Pea Pod has a bigger bathroom that is wheelchair friendly, a slightly smaller main room, but is still equipped the same. This cosy nook is more privately situated, overlooking rolling paddocks to the Derwent River. Mount Wellington can also be glimpsed from The Pea Pod.
What makes our pods ‘Eco Friendly’? We strive to incorporate as many environmentally conscious decisions into our pods as we can. The solar passive design of the pods reduces the need for electric heating. You will see for yourself how cosy you are behind the double-glazed windows on those crystal clear but chilly Tasmanian winter mornings!
The sustainably sourced building materials include; Eco Ply and reclaimed hardwoods. The tallow wood decks around the pods are up-cycled from a derelict industrial building in Sydney. If you are interested in finding out more about the design of the pods, check out www.ecoshelta.com
A huge component of our environmentally conscious design was the decision to install composting toilets and reed bed wastewater treatment systems.
The waterless, chemical-free, composting toilets save around 60,000 litres of drinking water a year (each) and use simple aerobic bacteria to reduce human waste by about 90% in volume to a substance that is chemically, biologically and aesthetically similar to topsoil. No sewage waste leaves our property and no effluent is pumped into Tasmania’s beautiful oceans, bays and rivers. It was a no brainer for us!
The grey water from the sink and shower in each Pod is filtered through a reed bed planted out with Tassel Cord Rush and Black Bristle Sedge. The wastewater undergoes a complex series of natural treatment processes as it passes through the root zone of the reeds. This filtered water is then reabsorbed into the soil or evaporated through a series of absorption trenches. The interiors of the pods are finished with VOC free paints and oils which are all natural and non-toxic so you can breathe in the freshest Tassie air only!
With all this in mind the pods are also beautiful spaces for people to enjoy!
