Between the inland city of Launceston and the coastal resort of George Town in Tasmania’s north-east lies the River Tamar and its picturesque valley, cutting through a rural patchwork landscape of outstanding scenic beauty. The area is the heartland of Tasmania’s wine industry with vineyards, orchards, lavender fields, pastures and forests on either side of the majestic river. A great way to see all the sights on offer is to make a round trip by car from Launceston to George Town, then cross the river to Beauty Point and return to Launceston on the other bank of the Tamar. The round trip is about 140 kilometres. There are plenty of historic villages where you can stop along the way and luxury accommodation is available.

George Town has a rich maritime history which you can explore at The Old Watch House Museum. Mount George lookout is also on our ‘don’t miss it’ list.
